Who Shouldn’t Get a Gastric Balloon in Dubai?

Most of what gets written about gastric balloons focuses on who qualifies: the BMI 27-40 range, the choice between 6-month balloon, 12-month balloon, swallowable balloon and soft silicone balloon, the six to twelve months the device stays in place. Less gets said about who doesn’t qualify, and why. If you’re researching an intragastric balloon in Dubai, it’s worth knowing the medical factors that can rule the procedure out before you book a consultation, not after.

BMI Is the First Filter, Not the Only One

BMI is usually the first number a gastric balloon clinic in Dubai asks about, because it sets the broad range, generally 27 to 40, where a balloon makes clinical sense. Below that range, the expected weight loss usually doesn’t justify the procedure. Above it, a balloon alone is unlikely to get you where you want to be, and bariatric surgery may be the more appropriate path. How that range is calculated, and what it means for you specifically, is covered on our gastric balloon candidacy page.

BMI is a filter, though, not a full medical clearance. Two people with an identical BMI can get very different answers once their full history is reviewed.

Medical Conditions That Can Rule Out a Gastric Balloon

A thorough screening looks at more than weight. Conditions that commonly rule out a gastric balloon, or require it to be delayed, include:

  • Prior surgery on the stomach or esophagus that has changed the anatomy a balloon needs to sit in
  • A large hiatal hernia, which can affect how the stomach and esophagus work together once a balloon is in place
  • An active stomach ulcer, esophagitis, or uncontrolled acid reflux disease
  • Bleeding disorders, or long-term use of blood-thinning medication that can’t safely be paused
  • Inflammatory bowel disease affecting the stomach or upper digestive tract
  • Significant liver disease, including cirrhosis
  • Pregnancy, or plans to conceive during the months the balloon would be in place
  • Uncontrolled alcohol or substance dependency

None of these are judgment calls you make on your own. They’re established through your medical history, sometimes an endoscopy, and a conversation with a specialist who can weigh your specific case rather than a general rule.

Why the Device You’re Considering Changes the Answer

Some of the factors above matter more for one device than another. 6-month balloon, 12-month balloon and soft silicone balloon are placed endoscopically under light sedation, so a condition that makes sedation or endoscopy risky can rule those three out specifically. swallowable balloon works differently: it’s a capsule you swallow, with no sedation and no endoscopy, which is why the swallowable balloon swallowable balloon option in Dubai can be the more realistic route for someone who’s otherwise a reasonable candidate but can’t safely undergo sedation. How the two placement methods actually compare, step by step, is covered on our placement options page.

What a Consultation Actually Checks

A proper consultation doesn’t stop at calculating BMI. Expect questions about your surgical history, current medications, reflux symptoms, and any digestive conditions, plus a review of whether an endoscopy is needed before anything is scheduled. This is also where the honest conversation happens about which of the four devices actually fits your situation, rather than which one looks best on paper.

If You’re Not a Candidate Right Now

A “not yet,” or “not this device,” answer isn’t the end of the conversation. Some of these conditions are temporary; reflux can be treated, and some medications can be adjusted under medical supervision, with the option revisited later. Others point toward a different weight-loss path altogether. Either way, finding out early from a specialist, rather than guessing from a BMI calculator alone, is what a consultation is for.
