Frequently Asked Questions
Is the gastric balloon painful?
Placement itself is done under mild sedation and is not painful. The first few days afterward can bring nausea, cramping, and a feeling of fullness as the stomach adjusts — this is expected and managed with medication, and usually eases within a week.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Published clinical studies report average weight loss of around 10% of total body weight, with some research citing up to 15–20% depending on balloon type and how closely the accompanying diet plan is followed. These are figures from published literature, not personally tracked outcomes.
Am I a candidate?
Gastric balloons are generally suitable for adults with a BMI between 27 and 40 who haven’t achieved lasting results through diet and exercise alone, or as a bridge option for those with a BMI above 50 ahead of a later bariatric procedure. Final candidacy is always confirmed at an in-person consultation, including a check for conditions like prior gastric surgery, hiatal hernia, or stomach ulcers that would rule it out.
Which balloon type is right for me?
That depends on your goals and how much time you want the balloon in place. Both options use the same non-adjustable, single-fill balloon — the 6-month balloon or the 12-month balloon — and the right one for you depends on your BMI and weight-loss goals, which your doctor will go through at consultation.
How much does it cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Gastric balloon treatment is a self-funded (cash) procedure and is generally not covered by UAE health insurance, since it is considered an elective weight-loss treatment. Dr Ulucay’s starting prices are AED 10,000 for the swallowable balloon, from AED 15,000 for a 6-month balloon and from AED 22,000 for a 12-month balloon. Your own figure is confirmed in writing after the consultation, where suitability is decided. See the full price guide, including other Dubai clinics’ published prices.
What are the risks?
Serious complications are uncommon. Reported risks in published research include persistent nausea requiring early removal, balloon deflation, and rarely, ulceration. Your doctor will discuss the specific risk profile for your chosen balloon type in detail.
How would I know if something’s wrong with the balloon?
Fluid-filled balloons are mixed with a blue dye (methylene blue) specifically for this reason. If the balloon ever deflates, this shows up as blue-tinted urine — a clear, early warning sign to contact the clinic immediately for prompt removal.
How is the balloon removed?
At the six or twelve-month mark, the balloon is removed in a second, brief endoscopic procedure, typically quicker than the original placement.
Is a gastric balloon better than surgery?
Neither is universally “better” — they suit different situations. A balloon is temporary, non-surgical, and generally suits more moderate weight-loss goals, while surgery offers larger, more permanent results for higher-BMI patients. This is worth discussing directly with your doctor against your specific goals.
