What happens here

Swift is a licensed day-surgery centre, which suits gastric balloon work well. Both routes are available:

  • Endoscopic balloon placement — under light sedation, 20–30 minutes, home the same visit
  • Endoscopic removal at the end of the 6 or 12-month period
  • Allurion swallowable balloon — taken awake as a capsule, no sedation needed at all
  • Consultations, assessment and follow-up appointments

Why sedation rather than general anaesthesia

Balloon placement does not require general anaesthesia. Light sedation keeps you comfortable while the endoscope passes, and you recover in well under an hour rather than sleeping off a general anaesthetic.

For the swallowable balloon there is no sedation at all — you are fully awake, and the whole visit takes about 15 minutes.

The setting

Swift is a purpose-built day-surgery facility with private consultation rooms and individual recovery bays. Appointments are spaced so you are not waiting in a full room.
