Nothing is permanently changed
Unlike bariatric surgery, a gastric balloon does not alter your anatomy. Nothing is cut, stapled, removed or rerouted. The balloon simply sits in your stomach for a defined period and then leaves. Your stomach returns to its normal size and function.
How it comes out
With an endoscopically placed balloon, removal is a short second procedure under light sedation at the 6 or 12-month mark — usually quicker than placement.
With the Allurion swallowable balloon, there is no removal procedure. At around 16 weeks a valve opens automatically, the balloon empties and passes naturally through the digestive system.
Can it be removed early?
Yes. If a balloon is genuinely not tolerated — persistent nausea or vomiting that does not settle — it can be taken out ahead of schedule. This is uncommon, and most early discomfort resolves within the first week, but the option exists and no one is stuck.
The part that is not reversible
Here is the honest counterweight. The device is fully reversible; the results are not automatically permanent. Published follow-up shows weight regain is common after removal when eating habits have not changed during the balloon period.
