Hair Loss After a Gastric Balloon: What Helps

If your hair seems to be shedding more than usual a few months into your gastric balloon program, you are not imagining it, and you are not alone. Noticeable hair thinning is one of the more common, least talked-about gastric balloon side effects, and it tends to show up right when patients are otherwise pleased with their progress. Here is what is actually going on, and what tends to help.

Why Rapid Weight Loss Triggers Hair Shedding

The shedding most patients notice is a pattern called telogen effluvium. It is well documented in the clinical literature on rapid weight loss, including after bariatric surgery and very low-calorie diets: a stressor on the body, whether that is sudden calorie restriction, a drop in protein or iron intake, or the physical stress of a new eating pattern, pushes a larger-than-usual share of hair follicles into their resting phase at the same time. Those resting hairs shed together, usually three to four months after the trigger, which is why the timing can feel delayed and confusing.

This is a recognised, usually temporary response to rapid change, not a sign that anything has gone wrong with the balloon itself.

Is This Specific to the Gastric Balloon?

No. The same pattern is reported after gastric sleeve and bypass surgery, after very low-calorie diets, and with GLP-1 weight-loss injections. What drives it is the speed and size of the weight change and the nutritional gap that can come with eating much less, not the particular method used to get there. Patients on any of the balloon options, whether placed endoscopically like 6-month balloon, 12-month balloon and soft silicone balloon, or swallowed with no sedation like swallowable balloon, can experience it, roughly in proportion to how much and how fast they lose weight.

What Actually Helps

There is no guaranteed fix, since the underlying cause is the pace of weight loss itself, but a few things consistently make a difference for patients:

  • Hitting your protein target every day, not just most days — this matters more than any supplement.
  • Keeping iron, zinc, biotin and vitamin D intake adequate, ideally checked with blood work rather than assumed.
  • Treating your post-balloon diet plan as a nutrition plan, not just a calorie limit — a thin diet of low-protein, low-nutrient foods makes shedding worse.
  • Being gentle with styling and heat tools while shedding is active, which will not stop it but limits added breakage.

Patients who stick closely to their gastric balloon diet plan tend to notice less shedding overall, which is one more reason the eating plan given alongside the balloon is worth following closely rather than treating as optional.

When It Resolves, and When to Get It Checked

For most people, shedding settles on its own within six to nine months as weight loss slows and intake stabilises, and regrowth follows the same timeline. It is not something a gastric balloon programme can promise to prevent entirely, since it is tied to the weight change itself. That said, hair loss can occasionally point to a nutrient gap, a thyroid issue or something unrelated to the balloon altogether, so shedding that is severe, patchy rather than diffuse, or still worsening well past the six-month mark is worth raising with your doctor rather than waiting out. This is general information, not an assessment of your own situation.

Bringing It Up With Your Team

If you are considering a gastric balloon and this is a genuine concern, it is a fair question to raise before placement, not after. Ask what nutritional monitoring is included during your follow-up visits — that is where shedding is usually caught early and managed at a well-run gastric balloon clinic in Dubai, rather than left to resolve on its own.
