6-month balloon and soft silicone balloon Placement Day: What Happens in Dubai

If you’ve booked an 6-month balloon, 12-month balloon, or soft silicone balloon gastric balloon and you’re wondering what the actual day looks like, that’s a fair question to ask before you commit to a date. Placement is quick and done under light sedation, but “quick” doesn’t tell you much about what to expect from the moment you walk in to the moment you’re home again. Here’s a plain walkthrough of the day, from preparation to discharge.

Before You Arrive

You’ll be asked to stop eating and drinking for a set number of hours before your appointment, usually from the night before — this is standard for any procedure involving sedation, so your stomach is empty when the endoscope goes in. Arrange for someone to bring you to the clinic and, more importantly, to take you home afterward. Sedation affects judgment and reaction time for the rest of the day, so you shouldn’t drive, and ideally shouldn’t be alone for the first few hours. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and leave jewellery and contact lenses at home if you can.

What Happens During Placement

An 6-month balloon gastric balloon Dubai placement, like 12-month balloon and soft silicone balloon gastric balloon procedures, is done endoscopically: a thin, flexible camera passes down your throat while you’re under light intravenous sedation, so you won’t be fully awake and won’t feel the procedure itself. The deflated balloon is guided into the stomach on the end of the endoscope, then filled with sterile saline once it’s correctly positioned. There are no incisions anywhere. The whole appointment, from sedation to a filled, correctly positioned balloon, typically takes twenty to thirty minutes, and patients go home the same day. For the full comparison of how this differs from the swallowable swallowable balloon option, see our balloon placement options page.

6-month balloon, 12-month balloon, or soft silicone balloon: Does the Day Itself Differ?

Practically, no. The placement technique is the same endoscopic method whether you and your doctor have chosen the six-month 6-month balloon, the twelve-month 12-month balloon, or soft silicone balloon. What differs between them is the device itself — fill volume, shape, and how long it’s designed to stay in — not how the appointment unfolds. If you haven’t settled on a device yet, that decision is worth making with your doctor beforehand, since it affects your plan for the months ahead rather than the day of placement.

Is a Gastric Balloon Placement Painful?

This is one of the most common questions people search before booking. The honest answer: you’re sedated during the procedure itself, so you shouldn’t feel it happening, but it isn’t accurate to call any sedation-based procedure painless. Some people wake up with a mild sore throat from the endoscope, and nausea or cramping as the stomach adjusts to the balloon is common in the first day or two. Discomfort varies between patients and isn’t something we can predict in advance.

Recovery Room and Going Home

After placement, you’ll rest in a recovery area until the sedation starts to wear off — usually thirty minutes to an hour, though gastric balloon recovery time for feeling fully alert again can stretch into the evening. You’ll be monitored for your vital signs and asked how you’re feeling before you’re cleared to leave. Most patients go home the same day; this isn’t an overnight stay. Your escort takes you home, and you rest for the remainder of the day rather than returning to work or driving.

Your First 24 Hours at Home

Nausea, a feeling of fullness, and mild cramping are the most common early symptoms as your body registers the new balloon. You’ll be given anti-nausea medication and a strict liquids-only diet to start, progressing gradually over the following days. Sip fluids slowly rather than gulping. Rest is more useful than pushing through. Call the clinic rather than waiting it out if you develop severe pain, repeated vomiting, fever, or anything that feels clearly beyond ordinary adjustment — our aftercare guide covers the full week-by-week progression in more detail.

What to Arrange Before Placement Day

  • A ride home — you cannot drive yourself after sedation.
  • Someone available for the first few hours at home, if possible.
  • Groceries for a liquids-only diet already in the house before you go in.
  • Time off work or commitments for the rest of that day, and ideally the next.
  • Any pre-procedure fasting instructions followed exactly as given.
