“Am I actually a candidate?” is usually the first question. Here is how that is genuinely assessed — including the reasons a balloon might not be right for you.
The BMI range
Gastric balloons are generally considered for adults with a BMI between 27 and 40 who have not achieved lasting results through diet and exercise alone.
For patients with a BMI above 50, a balloon is sometimes used as a bridge — reducing weight and surgical risk before a later bariatric operation.
Between 40 and 50, bariatric surgery is often the more effective option, though a balloon may still be discussed depending on your circumstances and preferences.
BMI is only the starting point
It is a screening number, not a decision. Two people with identical BMIs can have very different body composition, health risks and suitability. What also matters:
- Your weight history and what you have already tried
- Weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or high blood pressure
- Whether you are able to commit to dietary follow-up during the balloon period
- Your stomach anatomy, checked at examination
Some patients with a BMI slightly below 27 who have weight-related health conditions may still be appropriate candidates. That is a clinical judgement, not a formula.
When a balloon is not appropriate
Being clear about this matters as much as who qualifies. A balloon will not be placed if you have:
- Previous stomach surgery (sleeve gastrectomy, bypass, fundoplication)
- A large hiatal hernia, generally over 5cm
- Active stomach or duodenal ulcers
- Pregnancy, or plans to conceive during the balloon period
- Known gastrointestinal malignancy
- Severe inflammatory bowel disease or previous bowel obstruction
- Alcohol or drug dependency
Blood-thinning medication, untreated eating disorders, long-term NSAID use and severe uncontrolled reflux all need careful assessment before proceeding.
How candidacy is actually confirmed
In person. History, examination, and where a balloon is placed endoscopically, direct inspection of the stomach at the same session. No online calculator or form can substitute for that — ours included.
