Gastric Balloon Follow-Up Visits: What to Expect

Once your gastric balloon is in place, the placement appointment is really just the start. The months that follow involve a series of follow-up visits, and most patients considering the procedure want to know what those actually involve — how often they happen, what gets checked, and how long the whole thing runs — before they commit. Here’s a realistic look at what to expect.

Follow-up is different from the first days after placement

The first few days after placement are about adjusting: nausea, learning what you can eat, and settling into the liquid-to-soft-food progression. We cover that stage in detail on our aftercare guide. Follow-up visits are a different phase — they start once the initial adjustment has settled, and they continue on a set rhythm for as long as the balloon stays in.

What a typical follow-up visit covers

Each visit is short and focused, usually well under an hour. You can expect it to cover:

  • A weigh-in and a plain conversation about how the weeks since your last visit have gone
  • A check for any symptoms that need attention — persistent pain, vomiting, or signs the balloon may have deflated
  • A review of eating habits, with practical adjustments rather than generic advice
  • A check that you’re still taking your prescribed acid-suppressing medication as directed
  • Confirmation of your next appointment date

Nothing about these visits is invasive. They’re conversation and monitoring, not procedures, unless something specific needs further investigation.

How often you’re seen depends on which balloon you have

The schedule isn’t identical for every device. A 6-month balloon such as 6-month balloon or soft silicone balloon is on a tighter timeline, with follow-up spaced to track progress toward a removal date that arrives sooner. The 12-month balloon 12-month balloon is designed to stay in longer, so its follow-up visits are spread out over a longer stretch, with more time between check-ins in the middle months. Whichever device you have, the clinic sets out the specific schedule at your placement visit so there are no surprises later.

Questions worth bringing to your own follow-up

These visits are a two-way conversation, not just a weigh-in. It’s worth raising:

  • Whether your current rate of progress is in the range the team would expect at this stage
  • Any new symptoms, even ones that seem minor or unrelated
  • Whether your eating pattern needs adjusting, especially if progress has slowed
  • Anything that’s changed in your general health or medication since the last visit

Follow-up at either of our Dubai locations

Dr Kerim Erdem Ulucay sees gastric balloon patients at both Jumeirah and JLT, and follow-up visits can generally be scheduled at whichever gastric balloon clinic in Dubai is more convenient for you that month — you’re not locked into the location where your balloon was placed. If your work or home base shifts between the two areas during your treatment, say so and the clinic will work around it.

The final follow-up and what comes after

Your last scheduled follow-up before the balloon comes out is usually when the removal date is confirmed. The gastric balloon removal process itself is a separate, short endoscopic appointment, but the follow-up visits leading up to it are what determine the right timing, based on how you’re doing rather than the calendar alone.

If you’re earlier in the decision process and want to understand how this fits with candidacy or device choice first, our candidacy page is a good place to start.
